Peripheral nerve entrapments are a condition that often goes under the radar. They commonly present with poorly localised pain in the shoulder, upper arm, forearm, hand, or wrist. The symptoms also vary in location and presentation, with sensory symptoms like pins and needles that shift around.
In this video, which is an excerpt from our Masterclass on peripheral nerve entrapments, I highlight the treatment of distal entrapment sites, particularly Radial Tunnel Syndrome and the supinator muscle. The elbow is a cluster site for distal entrapments, particularly the radial nerve entrapment of the radial nerve at the supinator and the median nerve at the pronator teres.
Radial nerve entrapment can mimic lateral elbow pain and biceps tendon overuse injuries beautifully, so keep it in mind when looking at lateral elbow pain conditions.
Always keep palpation and neurodynamic stretching as key assessment tools. A clear understanding of the dysfunction and its root cause is always key to effective treatment. Once you've assessed thoroughly, you can highlight entrapment sites and treat accordingly.
In our full Masterclass we delve much deeper into common nerve entrapment sites. As part of the Masterclass you'll gain assessment and treatment tools for the median, ulnar, and radial nerves. I strongly recommend it to any hands-on therapist who deals with nerve entrapment clients.
