I looked up all the places where the New Testament authors record Christ referencing His Real Presence.
I found 20 different places where 5 different authors have Christ on the record saying He is ACTUALLY present in the Eucharist.
Matthew 26:26 “This is my body”
Matthew 26:27 “This is my blood of the new covenant”
Mark 14:22 “Take, this is my body”
Mark 14:24 “This is my blood of the covenant”
Luke 22:19 “This is my body which is given up for you”
Luke 22:20 “This chalice which is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood”
John 6:27 “Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to eternal life which the Son of Man will give to you”
John 6:35 “I am the bread of life”
John 6:41 “I am the bread which came down from Heaven”
John 6:48 “I am the bread of life”
John 6:51a “I am the living bread which came down from Heaven”
John 6:51b “if anyone eats this bread he will live forever”
John 6:51c “the bread which I shall give for the life of the world is my flesh”
John 6:53 “Truly, truly I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the son of man and drink his blood you have no life in you”
John 6:54 “He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life and I will raise him on the last day”
John 6:55 “My flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed”
John 6:56 “he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him”
John 6:57 “he who eats me will live because of me”
1 Corinthians 11:24 “This is my body which is for you”
1 Corinthians 11:25 “This chalice is the new covenant in my blood”
1 Corinthians 11:27 “whoever therefore eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of profaning body and blood of the Lord”
1 Corinthians 11: 29 “anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment upon himself”
Some observations:
1) These last 2 contributions from St. Paul, in addition to him quoting Jesus directly in 1 Corinthians 11:24-25, these last 2 from 1 Corinthians 11: 27 and 29 are super a super important rebuttal to those who would say “He just meant it as a symbol” How do you “just spiritually” eat and drink without discerning the body?
2) Jesus sees all of time. If he thought that, for the first 1500 years of the Church people would misunderstand him in these 22 places, he would have slipped in one “Like” or one simile to indicate He was speaking metaphorically. But he didn’t. He continued to hammer home at this.
3) America was founded about 200 years after the heresies of Martin Luther, John Calvin et. al. had taken root.
Christianity, at that time, was still able to subsist off of commonly held shared beliefs even though the Church had seen many people depart from Her. It takes time for defects to manifest and come to the surface
But we see in 2020, with streets on fire, riots and so forth that we either unite behind the True Presence of Christ in the Eucharist or we, as a nation, will perish.
Our credibility, as Christians, is completely nullified by the fact that we are 40,000 different denominations who, for every denomination that believes X you can find a denomination that believes the opposite of X.
The period of America’s founding was known as modernity. Post modernity’s goal has been, for the last 100 years, to show that “modernity” belief in a shared moral code despite a fractured Church, is a complete farce….and I know they are right!
Post modern thinkers like Foucault and Nietzshe and Derrida and many others have done us a great service…they’ve shown that there isn’t some modern harmony that’s possible between Christians…it is the Church…or it is the Atheistic chaos of Communism, or it is a united Church.
4) The Real Presence of Christ that we celebrate today means that God breaks into our world…that he walks and exists among us…not just in a spiritual way, not just floating around up there…not just accessible to us in our minds when we close our eyes to pray…no today is a celebration that God objectively…not dependant on our personal experiences or desires…exist and dwells with us and is here…whether we like it or not…whether we believe it or not…the Israelites before us marched with God’s presence in their midst in the Ark of the Covenant…we hit the streets in many places…my parishes will be doing this shortly after I return…with a Corpus Christi procession…we march to battle behind and with our Lord Leading the way as we go out to face down the armies of darkness…the only question we have to answer is whether we march with Christ and His Church or the army of darkness that is amassing for a final showdown.
There is no middle ground.
