In Who Was Gandhi? for Kids, you and your students will learn a lot about this incredible man and his lasting impact on the world. You may even learn some things you didn't know before.

Gandhi was born Mohandas Gandhi in 1869 in Porbandar, India, to a wealthy family. He studied in London to become a lawyer and began his career in South Africa. It was there that he experienced discrimination and mistreatment because of his race. Gandhi was arrested and imprisoned multiple times for his protests. He never resorted to violence, however. Many believe it was during this time in Africa that Gandhi developed his idea of non-violent protests, or Satyagraha.

Throughout his life, Gandhi opposed rules or laws he disagreed with in a peaceful way, through methods like hunger strikes, refusal to work, boycotts, and meditation. He accomplished many changes for India in this way. Fo instance, South Africa agreed to recognize Indian marriages as legitimate. They also go rid of taxes that only Indians were required to pay.

When Gandhi returned to India after 20 years in South Africa, he was considered a hero. Many people started calling him Mahatma Gandhi, a title given only to the holiest of men. Mahatma means great soul. Gandhi became the leading figure in protesting against Great Britain's presence in India. They finally succeeded, but what followed were tensions between Pakistan and India. These tensions led to Gandhi's death, yet his death ironically led to peace between the two countries.
