Did you know you can create a custom short link for your URL on Instagram? Today we’re going to go over the benefits of using a Bit.ly link.
By using a link shortener, your URL will be more memorable, attractive and you’ll be able to track how much traffic you drive to your website from your social media. The only place where you can put a clickable link on Instagram is in your profile right below your bio description. Since Instagram only allows you to post one URL, make sure you use this space effectively. The good news is that you can change this URL as often as you like.

Let’s get started on how to make a bit.ly link. Go to bitly.com If you don’t have an account already, go ahead an create one. Bonus, It’s completely free!

1. In the top right corner click, create a Bitlink.

2. Open a new tab and go to the website you want to create a link shortener for. This link can be your Blog page, product page, a custom landing page or any other page on your website.

3. Copy the long URL and paste it in the box below.

4. Where it says customize, delete everything after the backslash. This is where you want to come up with something creative and memorable. Once you customize your bit.ly link, don’t forget to hit save!

5. Last but not least, you want to make sure that your link shortener works properly! Copy and paste the link shortener into the URL section of your Instagram where it says Website. Hit Done, and click on the final product. There you have it! Your very first custom link shortener.

When you create this shortened URL, you aren’t just creating a small character hyperlink. You are also creating new trackable analytics for your website. These analytics are available right from the bit.ly website. Stats include the total amount to clicks it has gotten over time where it was shared (ie: Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn etc), the geographic distribution of the clicks and other good marketing related information, which can help you further identify your ideal target audience.
