As we welcome Lunar New Year and the beginning of the Year of the Horse.
Across New South Wales, communities will gather to celebrate. While many know it as Chinese New Year, this season is shared by cultures across Asia. It is a time of harvest, renewal and family.
For me, Lunar New Year brings back memories of dumplings, red packets filled with lucky money and the excitement of lion dancers. But most of all, it is about togetherness. It is the closest thing in our culture to Christmas — a time when families travel long distances to reunite and start the year with hope.
In Strathfield, where so many families come from migrant backgrounds, these celebrations are not just cultural traditions. They are part of the Australian story. They show how East and West meet, how heritage and belonging sit side by side.
That is the Australia I am proud of where cultures are celebrated, stories are shared and we move forward together.
