WALKS IN HAMPSHIRE at SILCHESTER & CALLEVA ATREBATUM (ROMAN TOWN) (4K)

Описание: In this episode of my series “ Walks in Hampshire”, I take a 4.5 mile “circular” walk at Silchester & Calleva Atrebatum (the site of a Roman town) in the North of the county – quite close to the border with Berkshire. Once again I am accompanied by my Whippet, Logan.

I park my car at the Silchester Walks car park (which is free) just to the East of Silchester and the first part of my walk is an exploration of the site of the old Roman town.

Although nothing remains of the town within the the site, there are plenty of sections of the Roman wall that surrounded it. My route took me along a path on top of the Roman wall on the Northern side of the site – heading in an Easterly direction.

After the Romans & Anglo Saxons left the site, a small settlement did continue at the Eastern end where there is still a Manor House and church today,

After a quick look at the church, I headed North to visit a well preserved amphitheatre ( built originally by the Romans) and then out into the countryside.

I had originally planed to head West after passing Kiln Yard Copse but unfortunatley I took a wrong path (!) and accidently continued heading North through Nine Acre Copse. Eventually I realised my error, and turned back South, passing through the edge of Simm's Copse and back to the car park.

As it was so hot (and I had Logan with me), I decided to abandon my original route plan (which would have involved exploring the iron age hill fort to the North of Silchester) and instead head straight to the village and my final destination – The Calleva Arms pub.

I then only had a short walk back to my car along a section of the Brenda Parker Way.
