Fish farms in Iraq's Nineveh Plains are supplying the market in Mosul, filling a gap there.
Farm fish is currently the only fish available in Mosul amid a fishing ban in the Tigris River.
STORY-LINE:
At his fish farm in Iraq's Nineveh Plains, Ghazwan Joshua says it takes about eight months for the fish to grow to 2 kilograms.
The fish weighs only a fraction of that, about 20 to 25 grams, when it is initially brought to the farm.
But people prefer big fish, he says, especially Mosul residents.
Fish farms are currently filling a gap in the market in Mosul, especially during the fishing ban in the Tigris River.
A ban is implemented from March 15 to the beginning of winter in November.
"All the pond fish, the breeding fish, is loaded on the back of vehicles and delivered here," says Mohammed Abu Sadiq, a cook in Mosul's fish market.
Now, breeding fish or pond fish is the only fish available in Mosul.
Cooks like Abu Sadiq clean the fish and prepare meals that are sold at the market.
Most of the fish farms are in the Nineveh Plains and were built by Christians who returned to the area after it was cleared from Islamic State militants in 2017.
