Di Gilpin describes the relevance of traditional Gansey knitwear in her work, and how she interprets this inspiration so to create beautiful and richly patterned designs.
Di has long been fascinated by the folklore and history of fishing communities in Britain; particularly how they integrated their stories and symbolism through hand-knit into the patterning of the Gansey jumpers which fishermen wore. They mark a greatly relevant part of our social history in how the patterns developed, and in how they were knitted to subtle reveal the unique relationship between life and work.
Another inspiration is how the they would traditionally use a unique seamless knitting technique to create shape and structure into their knitwear. Di continues to evolve this refined style by knitting on the round and using inventive ways of construction to produce beautiful contemporary forms and fascinating detail, subtly telling the story of the land and seascapes which surround us.
