Professor Richard Rohrbaugh of Lewis and Clark College discusses the concepts of honor and shame as core values in Mediterranean culture and thus of the Biblical world. Rohrbaugh draws on his experiences of living in both the Mediterranean and Western worlds, and concentrates on passages in the New Testament that are influenced by the culture of the region to highlight the important roles of honor and shame.
This is one of several lectures from the Biblical Archaeology Society DVD series "Peasants, Widows, Bandits and Beggars: The Everyday World in which Jesus Lived." These lectures discuss the social and cultural context of the earliest Christian writings through concepts of honor and shame, peasant economics, kinship and family patterns, social banditry and life in the cities and villages of the Mediterranean world.
