Chukai or Chukur or Mesta or sour fruit. (চুকাই বা চুকুর বা মেস্তা বা টক ফল)

Описание: The fruit is known by different names in different parts of Bangladesh. For example: Chukai in Rajshahi, Ambal Madhu or Ambal Madhu in Khulna and Satkhira, Chukul in Dhamrai and Manikganj, Holfa in Sylhet, Medash in Comilla, Metts or Mesta, etc.
Besides, the names Chukur, Chukuri, Chupuri, Chukor, Chupar, Chuka, Chukki, Chui, Mesta, Khiirup etc. are also common.
It is known as Tengamora in India Assam, Lalchatni in Kerala, Chaye-Tarsh in Iran, Karkadi in Arab countries, Sarel in Caribbean and Latin America, Rosella, or Roselle, in Indonesia, Bisap in many African countries.
The fruit is sour in taste; Color dark red. This plant is cultivated commercially in many countries of the world.
This fruit is also available in Bangladesh, but it is not cultivated commercially.
It is a split fruit, meaning it bursts when ripe and the seeds are dispersed.
It is an uncommon fruit in Bangladesh. Due to its sour taste, it is used in making jams, jellies, or pickles. Apart from this, sour, or khatta, is also eaten cooked in this country.
Chukai is widely used as a cheap vegetable in many countries. It is probably the most popular vegetable in Myanmar. Chukai leaves are fried with garlic, green chillies and prawns or other fish or cooked in curry.
Chukai leaves and dried shrimps are also eaten cooked in sour or khatta and are quite popular in Myanmar. It is one of the favorite vegetables of the Chakmas of Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh. It grows well in Jhum hills. In Chakma language it is called Amilye.

In Italy, Africa and Thailand, chukai leaves are made into herbal teas. In Trinidad it is customary to mix this tea with beer.

Chukai plant is believed to be used as a medicine to lower blood pressure. Good-quality fiber is obtained from the trunk of this plant, So in many countries, the Chukai tree is cultivated as an alternative to jute. At one time, the Chukai plant was used as a diuretic medicine.
A mild laxative is used in the treatment of heart disease, cancer, and nervous disorders.
