==============================
Act I: The story is set in 1867 Paris. Ciboulette, an orphan who sells vegetables at the Les Halles market, is pressured by her uncle to marry one of her eight suitors. After a fortune-teller predicts she will marry a man who is hiding in her cart, she spots a wealthy but idle man, Antonin, who has just been dumped by his lover, Zénobie. To buy herself time, she tells her uncle that she is engaged to Antonin, who ends up hiding in her cart.
Act II: Ciboulette's uncle and aunt try to convince her to marry. Meanwhile, the wealthy millionaire, Antonin, falls in love with Ciboulette. He expresses his love for her, but when Ciboulette pretends to be an exotic Spanish singer named Conchita Ciboulero, he is captivated but insists he can't fall in love again. This leads to comic interludes and songs, as the plot unravels and the fortune-teller's "three signs" start to fall into place, ensuring that Antonin is the right man for Ciboulette.
Act III: The opera concludes with all the plot threads tying up nicely. The three signs of the fortune-teller come true, confirming that Antonin is the right man for Ciboulette. The story ends with all ends well, with Ciboulette and Antonin united in love.
