The research took place in Touws River, where four community groups participated in a structured programme combining Interactive Group Model group therapy with a creative process phase aimed at strengthening community connection and social cohesion.
Partnering with researchers from Stellenbosch University’s Ukwanda Rural Health Unit, the team explored a key question:
Does the Interactive Group Model truly create meaningful and lasting change?
The findings point to something powerful — when people experience authentic connection in a safe and brave group space, they begin to feel worthy of healing, belonging, and change.
Participants described profound shifts in self-perception, relationships, and community connection — with many of these changes still present nine months after the group process ended.
This conversation explores what happens when relationships, vulnerability, and shared humanity are placed at the centre of the therapeutic process.
🧠 Key ideas you’ll learn:
How the Interactive Group Model was implemented in a community development context
The role of authentic connection and relational safety in psychological healing
Why people first need to feel worthy of healing and belonging before change can happen
The power of shared stories and shared pain in building resilience and connection
How group processes can strengthen social cohesion and community leadership
🔬 Research insights discussed:
The qualitative research highlighted several powerful themes emerging from the community groups:
• Connection creates worthiness – Participants reported feeling worthy of healing and belonging through authentic group connection.
• Groups become family – Members described the group as a “family,” strengthening relationships within the wider community.
• Sustainable change – Many participants reported continued personal change months after the programme ended.
🛠️ Try this in your next group
Prioritise relational safety before therapeutic techniques.
Create spaces where members can be seen, heard, and valued.
Encourage authentic sharing without pressure — people often want to tell their stories when safety is present.
Recognise that healing happens through relationships, not only through insight.
