New NGO STOP kick started its launch on the 25th March, 2009
In order to raise awareness and educate the public on HKs dubious pet trade, STOP female ambassadors - Holly Suan Gray, Tina Jane and Sky Tao- were body painted from head-to-toe as dogs and cats, chanted slogans and handed out leaflets from 12-3pm in Central.
The demonstration marked the first in what will be a series of STOP grass root initiatives that intend to help the public understand where pets come from (illegal breeders), the consequences of purchasing a pet from a store (sick and dying animals) and the importance of "adopting not shopping". These simple facts can help educate the public and possibly limit in the future the 2,000 homeless dogs and cats that are killed in Hong Kong government every month.
STOP began 12 years ago as "HK No Kill" an open forum for early NGOs to air their animal welfare concerns. However, with animal shelters now at full capacity, funds running low and as the situation in HK becomes more and more helpless, the groups been reformed with a new focus and new drive.
The Bloomberg interview by Bernard Lo was quintessential in driving mass publicity and awareness.
STOPs new focus and agenda for 2009 is to take action by to educating the mass public, to lobby the government on animal welfare issues and to gain community support as a whole.
Key campaigns will target two of the biggest problems in Hong Kong:
1. Pet Trade Accountability
2. Trial Trap, Neuter and Release (TNR) programme for dogs--which has been stalled by the government for over 5 years
We look forward to your support! And remember ADOPT. DONT SHOP"
