After an Earth of ash and bone, Lura steps into a completely different planet: an early Eocene greenhouse forest, hot, humid, and overflowing with new life. Stocky Ectoconus herds, hoofed browsers with heavy bodies, move slowly under tree ferns, turning sunlight into flesh and bone. Slender Phenacodus slip between trunks on long legs, living shields of pure speed – one lineage trusting weight, the other trusting distance.
But behind every gentle heartbeat, an older hunger waits. That hunger has a name: Pachyaena, the “thick hyena” – a wolf- to bear-sized mesonychid predator that lived from the latest Paleocene into the early Eocene, roughly 56–48 million years ago. It reads the forest with its nose, picks out the limping Ectoconus at the herd’s edge, and ends lives in a few brutal heartbeats. Lura tracks its pawprints, witnesses the panicked stampede, the perfect angle of attack, and the quick, efficient killing that keeps this new age turning.
In the end, observation isn’t enough. The hunter from a future age meets the hunter of this one. In a soaked clearing of ferns and rotten logs, Pachyaena throws its full weight forward – and Lura answers by turning that momentum against it, slamming the predator of the Eocene into the mud and choking its road to an abrupt end. She walks away, leaving the carcass to scavengers, knowing that this age has already chosen its hunters… and she is still one of them.
