Now we get onto the regular hidden characters of this game. And boy are there a ton of them. I believe every character in the game is unlocked as a result of Konquest Mode. As I previously mentioned, it’s basically the (semi)free-roaming story mode of the game. It has an insane number of secrets and cameos, including numerous hidden characters who can only be unlocked by finding their hidden treasure chest in the mode. In fact, only two characters can be unlocked in The Krypt; Noob-Smoke, and another character we’ll see pretty soon. The extremely hidden nature of unlocking characters in this game meant that…well, I simply never unlocked them all. Nowadays it would be no problem with the internet at my disposal, but back when I was playing this game Youtube was barely a thing yet and wireless internet wasn’t even common place. Needless to say, there’s something a little cathartic about finally getting to see everything in a game I barely scratched the surface of. Then again, that’s a big part of this series anyhow.

Interestingly enough, this time round a regular character from MKDA returns. Kenshi is a bit of a fan favourite, it must be said, and it’s rather obvious as to why; he’s a badass blind swordsman with telekinetic powers. He can telekinetically shove opponents around, throwing them behind him or in front of him, can utilise a telekinetic flurry of hits and even a telekinetic slam attack, which launches the opponent up into the air and allows Kenshi to safely execute a combo on them. He even has a teleport move, to close in on the opponent after knocking them away from him and put further pressure on them. This comes together to make Kenshi an incredibly competent, well-constructed character. He has five special moves in total, which coupled with his fighting styles definitely helps to make him feel like a more fleshed out character than most, and compared to many of the other characters he definitely comes across as one which Boon and Co. put a fair amount of time and care into. He’s badass, extremely competent, and all-around just a pretty great character.

Another thing to note is just how much fanservice there is in this game. Deception really took the time to throw in a ton of fanservice, mostly in the form of classic stages like the Acid Pool, and even the battle tower stage from MK3. Indeed, with all its unlockable and unplayable elements, coupled with its varied and interesting levels, there really is a sense of wonder and epic-ness which the MK series hadn’t quite reached before, at least not since MK2. Luckily, it’s something we’ll also get to see when I reach the reboot series.

This won’t be the last time we see Kenshi, either.

Up next, I finally get to look at a relatively interesting character introduced in MK3, whose portrayal in MK:Annihilation is, to this day, considered one of the best instances of acting in existence.
