Jason writes:
Oblique Music for Four Plus (blank) was originally commissioned as a concerto for Sō and string orchestra by the League of Composers Orchestra. I don’t have a strong relationship with the concerto. I have played a couple and never imagined writing one. I never fell in love with the ideal of the heroic soloist or soloists pitted against the orchestra and, until now, I never figured out an alternative relationship that struck my fancy. But in the end, a concerto is just music for two groups to play together. In this case, it is music for four plus (blank). I am happy that this version is music for four plus (four) and that the (four) is the Bergamot Quartet!
In Oblique Music for Four Plus (blank), I picture the two groups as partners. Sometimes they act together as one big group and sometimes they act independently in support of each other. Within the groups are smaller groups: the percussionists are paired up as units and the string quartet find teams in moments too. Between the groups are pairs as well: each percussionist is teamed with a string player: a percussionist with violin 1, a percussionist with violin 2, etc.
In the three connected sections that make up this oblique music, I have tried to play on these connections. In some way, the piece comes as much from abstract social politics as from abstract sound conceptions, though I find both interesting.
The title is a soft nod to Brian Eno’s Oblique Strategies, which have gotten many musicians around a dead end. Thank you Mr. Eno! - Jason Treuting

Treuting’s Oblique Music for Four Plus (blank) exists in two forms: a concerto with string orchestra and an octet with string quartet. Like Steve Reich in his quartet Different Trains, Jason asks the string players to think at times like a percussionist, playing complex rhythmic cycles in unison. The Bergamot Quartet have become frequent Sō collaborators, joining us for both Angélica’s and Jason’s pieces in this collection.
