The 50mm Rockinger RO 500 coupling is the regarded as one of the best on the Australian market, for its single hand ease of operation. It is the same style of coupling as the 50 mm Ringfeder type. Testament to its superior quality is the fact that for the tenth time in a row, specialists in the transport industry have awarded ROCKINGER with the distinction of “best brand” for the towing hitches category.
In this edition of Rockinger Road review, we visit De Bruyn’s Transport in Burnie Tasmania to see how their Rockinger tow couplings have been standing up in a round the clock magnetite haulage operation.
The 120-strong De Bruyn fleet handles a wide range of transport tasks right across Tasmania, including live fish transport, mine logistics to just about every mine in the state, and general freight coming by ship from the mainland. De Bruyn’s Transport has provided transport services for the West Coast mining industry for nearly 50 years. On April 1, 1965, the Company commenced carting for the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company and later that year for the Renison Tin Mine. Today, De Bruyn’s Transport proudly continues to provide transport services for the majority of Tasmanian mining industy.

Rockinger 5O 500 DRIVER CHECKS
The driver should check that the Coupling is free from visible defects, including missing parts, cracked or broken parts etc. These checks should be carried out each time before the Coupling is used.
1 Close coupling before cleaning with high-pressure washers
2 Clean all parts, visually inspect and if damaged repair or replace
3 Check that the connection bolts are present, secure and correctly torqued
4 Ensure that the Coupling operates correctly, ie, opens and closes with all safety features fully effective
5 Safety pin must be flush with guide bush (the proper function of the remote indicator must be checked – if the safety pin is flush with guide bush it must light green)
Function test from remote display and control pin:
A Coupling is closed and secured: control pin is flush with its housing
B Coupling is not closed: indicator lamp is not illuminated, control pin is protruding.
6 Check lower bush for dirt & blockage
7 Passage below pin must be free
8 The support ring for the drawbar eye must be replaced when due to wear, the drawbar eye can contact the lower bush or when the height H is 16,5 mm or less. The lower bush must not be damaged under any circumstances, as this will impair closure of coupling! Take care to prevent risk of accident! Always grease support ring to reduce wear (please consult repair leaflet, available on request, for details of replacing).
9 Bearings:
Longitudinal play
• Grip coupling head (not jaw funnel) with both hands
when uncoupled and move vigorously in longitudinal direction: No longitudinal play is allowed.
Vertical play
• Open coupling
• Move coupling head up and down with appropriate
tool: Vertical play may not exceed 3 mm measured at coupling head (centre axis of coupling pin).
10 Coupling pin:
To check the wear of the coupling pin, use the ROCKINGER reference gauge (part no. 57122).
When the main ovulated section has worn down to 46,5 mm – or before – the coupling pin must be replaced.
The maximum vertical play of the coupling pin may be 2 mm at the most.
11 After cleaning re-grease coupling pin and support
Note: Only lightly grease
