Berlin Diary – The Bears and the Feeling of Home

While exploring Berlin, you often come across life-sized but differently colored plastic bear statues. They actually carry symbolic meaning: they represent peace, harmony, and prosperity. These bears travel around the world as well, spreading the very same message. Once you learn that the word “Berlin” itself is rooted in the concept of a bear, it suddenly makes perfect sense—Berlin promoting peace and harmony globally becomes a meaningful coincidence.

On my first day in Germany, I managed to visit many of the city’s famous spots. One of them was Unter den Linden, which literally means “Under the Linden Trees.”

But overall, after hours of walking, the cold weather, and the overwhelming stone jungle of a massive metropolis, a person naturally starts longing for the warmth of home. By the end of the day, I, too, found myself missing my own place—my homeland, my people.
