The Buddhist Monuments of the Horyu-ji Area are a fascinating and beautiful UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located in the city of Nara, ancient capital of Japan, the highlight here is the world's oldest wooden building, the incredible Horyuji Pagoda. It dates back to the 6th century and is marginally older than the second-oldest wooden building in the world, the nearby Hondo, or main hall. The rest of the compound is also very interesting, so let's go exploring!
