Jeraigaon, the quiet village in Upper Assam’s Dibrugarh district and birthplace of ULFA-I chief Paresh Baruah, is witnessing a political shift. Once the cradle of the "Sovereign Assam" movement, the village now echoes with election campaigns.
Bimal Baruah, retired armyman and elder brother of Paresh, is campaigning for the NDA despite disappointment over the local AGP MLA ticket denial. The conflict remains deeply personal — Bimal’s own son joined the ULFA-I and remains unaccounted for.
Recent drone strikes on rebel camps in Myanmar and retaliatory attacks in Tinsukia have heightened tensions. While AGP and BJP flags fly in the village, locals stress that development is welcome, but lasting peace is the only true currency.
