Baking My Way to Success | Underestimated Web Series - Episode 1

Описание: Hi, I'm Collette and I want to thank you for joining me today. I wanted to make this web series to share a little bit more about my life and hopefully inspire others out there to know that a disability is not inability!

I was born with Down Syndrome in Ridgefield, Connecticut, where I developed a passion for baking after taking classes in high school. I then attended Clemson University in South Carolina and finished a three-year LIFE program in just two years. After that I moved to Boston, where I was sure I would find a paying job and start my new life. I went on many job interviews for years that seemed to go very well, and I would hear the same thing - “it was great to meet you, Collette, but at this time we feel you are not a good fit for our company.” I was not going to let rejection stop me from following my dreams and doing meaningful work, so I decided to start my own company called Collettey’s Cookies.

In just a few years I have sold over 750,000 cookies across the nation and Canada and now have over 15 employees, several with disabilities just like me. I have starred in the Peacock Docuseries "Born For Business", been featured in numerous publications and programs (like People Magazine, Forbes), won multiple awards, started a nonprofit, written a children's book "Collette in Kindergarten", traveled the country sharing my story and have even spoken at the UN.

With this series I want to encourage other people out there to focus on their abilities rather than what they can’t do. So today I am so excited to share it with you during National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month and just a week before World Down Syndrome Day. Did you know that only 19.1% people with disabilities were employed in 2021? I am not only determined to show everyone how capable people with disabilities are, but my mission is to open production facilities across the country and employ thousands of disabled people!
