Durga, whose name means "she who is difficult to reach," embodies the ultimate form of transcendent Shakti. Her story is central to the Durga Saptashati, where she is invoked to defeat the buffalo demon Mahishasura—a symbol of tamas, ego, and inertia. Emerging from the combined energies of all the gods, Durga represents the force that destroys both external and internal ego-driven forces that disrupt harmony.

With her many arms, weapons, and divine strength, Durga rides a lion and slays Mahishasura, representing the triumph over ego and the alignment with universal truth. Durga is especially worshipped during the autumnal Navaratri, a time to gather Shakti and overcome the stagnant parts of our personality.
