By the time Glen Boss guided Makybe Diva to her historic third Melbourne Cup in 2005, their partnership had become legendary. He felt good in the mounting yard. “I was so confident,” he recalled. “It’s an incredible feeling when you’ve got the race won a long way from home, and everything slows down.”
As she thundered down the straight in front of over 100,000 fans, Boss found himself in a rare stillness. “In that moment, you get this kind of quiet pause. It’s only for a millisecond, but it’s still – everything slows. I could hear the crowd all the way down the straight, and I could actually hear parts of Greg’s call. It was the most incredible experience – I’ve never felt that before, and I’ve never felt it since.”
He had time to enjoy every stride. “I got to enjoy 300 metres of that moment,” he said. “As I was reaching the line, my grin was growing bigger and bigger – because it was all over.” When Makybe Diva crossed the post, history was made. “I got that real sense that we’d done something like Hillary climbing Mount Everest. This was something no one’s ever experienced,” Boss said. “Me, her, Lee and the team at Markdel – we’d done something no one else had.”
