Hey guys, it's Jake here with etrailer. Today we have a 2021 Dodge Durango, and we're gonna be taking a look at and I'm gonna show you how to install the Draw-Tite Class IV 2 inch hitch receiver. Adding a 2 inch hitch receiver is gonna allow you to do a few different things. You can use it with accessories like a cargo carrier or a bike rack. You can take those bikes to and from the trailer, you can get some of the cargo outta your Durango and put it on a carrier, like bulkier items, like a cooler, or big luggage bags. It'll give you a little bit more space inside of your vehicle.
Now with this being a Class IV that's gonna bump it into a higher weight rating, which will be great for towing. If you're going to be towing with your Durango, I highly recommend, and for legality purposes, you will have to have at least four pole wiring, if not seven pole. Today we are installing a seven pole wiring with this hitch. Now our 2 inch hitch is going to come with a 5/8th inch hitch pin hole. Our hitch pin and clip here does not come with the hitch, but we do have plenty on our website, locking and non-locking.
Your safety chain loops are a big flat bar style, which are great for getting larger safety chains on there. You'll have more than enough space with even this S-hook style, they fit on there great. You're gonna have a max tongue weight capacity of 900 pounds, that is the downward force on the inside of the receiver tube, so how much it can hold up by itself whether it's free standing like a cargo carrier or with a trailer. You're probably not gonna get up to 900 pounds with a cargo carrier because we don't even carry one that goes up that high, so just keep that in mind. And then your gross trailer weight rating is gonna be 6,000 pounds.
Now this trailer hitch is rated for weight distribution, so you can use it for towing a small car trailer or an enclosed trailer, if you have weight distribution on that. The tongue weight capacity will stay at that 900 pounds, but your gross trailer weight capacity will go up to 7,500 pounds. Now some measurements for you. From the center of our hitch pin hole to the outer most part of our bumper, it's really only about an inch, maybe an inch and a half. You'll use that measurement when comparing it to other accessories that you want to fold up to the back of your vehicle.
But, I can tell you with it being only about an inch, inch and a half, you shouldn't have any problems with any accessory fitting on this. The hitch receiver tube itself, I'd say the collar is gonna be the only thing that sticks out past the edge of the bumper, so you still shouldn't have to worry about hitting your leg on it unless, of course, you're dragging your leg across the rear fascia, which is not very common. From the ground to the top inside our receiver tube, it's 14 inches. You want to keep that in mind for those accessories hanging off the back of your vehicle. 14 inches is pretty high off the ground so you shouldn't have to worry about those accessories dragging. Just keep in mind though, for when you get those heavier loads on the back, you may want to look into suspension enhancements for the rear end of your Durango and definitely stay within those capacities that your Durango is rated for. As far as the installation goes, this install is very, very easy. You remove four factory bolts, lift your hitch up into place, and put those same four factory bolts back into place. With that, you will have this exposed cross tube. The Durango does have a removable panel right here that you can install a more factory looking hitch, but those you have to remove the rear fascia of the vehicle. And I can tell you from my experience here, I have removed the rear fascia of a lot of different cars and the Durango has gotta be one of the more difficult ones, especially when the vehicle starts getting older and older. You will have difficulty taking them off without breaking some panels on the backside. So, if the exposed cross tube does not bother you, I would highly recommend doing this 'cause it's only gonna take you about 15 minutes to get this hitch installed. So with that being said, let's go ahead and show you how to do it. To begin our installation, you want to take a ratchet with a 21 millimeter socket. You'll probably want a short socket on it. We'll have a fact
