Psychosis can be described as a condition that affects the way your brain processes information. It can cause people to lose touch with reality and may lead to delusions and hallucinations.

A delusion is a false believe about reality, which a person keeps on believing despite obvious proof to the contrary. As an example psychotic people commonly believe they are spied on, drugged, followed or cheated on.
Hallucinations are where someone sees, hears, smells, tastes or feels things that don't exist outside their mind.
Other common symptoms are disorganization in speech, thinking and movements. This may cause people with a psychosis to rapidly change topics while speaking, it may lead to incomprehensible speech and it may cause repetitive, odd, or sometimes purposeless movements.
In addition people with a psychoses may experience a reduced emotional expression, a lack of motivation and sleeping problems.

Psychosis itself is considered a symptom, which can be part of several mental health disorders, like: schizophrenia, depressia, bipolar disorder, schizoaffective disorder, delusional disorder, schizotypal personality disorder, paranoid personality disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, and obsessive compulsive disorder.

Furthermore it can also be caused by severe sleep deprivation, extreme stress, traumatic life events (especially childhood trauma), substance abuse, brain injuries, several forms of cancer and nutritional deficiencies (like vitamine B12 deficienty).

Prevalence:
Recent studies have shown us that a random person's risk to develop a psychosis in the following 12-months is about 0,39%. The lifetime risk of the general population is about 0,75%. Which makes a psychosis quite rare.

Possible treatments options:
Lifestyle changes: change your cloths at least a few times a week, shower regularly, maintain a tidy home and workspace and keep a structured sleeping schedule. Try to wake up and go to sleep at fixed times, aim for 7-9 hours of sleep per night and try to avoid sleeping during the day. In addition it is often helpful to plan and fill your days. Next up follow a healthy diet. Eat enough vegetables and vitamins and drink about 1,5-2L of water a day. Lastly, try to stay in touch with your loved ones, your friends, family and colleagues.

Secondly you treating physician may prescribe you medication. Most commonly antipsychotics.

Depending on the underlying mental health disorder and your other symptoms, your doctor might also prescribe: Mood stabilizers, antidepressants and/or anti-anxiety medication.

-Psychological treatments may also be helpful. This can be followed individually, as family or in a group settings. Examples are: CGT, VERS-training, Acceptance and commitment therapy, interpersonal and social rhythm therapy, psycho-education and family-focussed therapy.=
