Bolivia has its first woman president, Senora Lidia
Gueiler. Her inauguration on November 16th 1979 ended
another attempt by the military to block the path of full
democracy, and the coup leader, Colonel Alberto Natusch-Busch,
resigned the presidency he had claimed by force. Natusch
held power for only 16 days, but he removed from the
presidency a civilian, Walter Guevara, who was appointed as
a compromise candidate after inconclusive general elections
of July 1st. Senora Gueiler will hold the office of president
for less than a year, with fresh elections scheduled for next May.
