Bird Dog in the line of fire - Vietnam War. From the very start of the Vietnam war Forward Air Controllers played a very important role. The FAC's acted as an on-scene commander of the strike forces and as a coordinator of any subsequent combat search and rescue operation. Flying the Cessna O-1 Bird Dog. A two-seater aircraft, slow, unarmed, and unarmoured, carrying limited payload. It had no instruments for night operations, and radio communication onboard was limited to one radio channel at a the time. During the Vietnam War, 469 O-1 Bird Dogs were lost to all causes. And more than 200 FAC’s were killed in action.
