Evoking traditional African American spirituals, George Gershwin’s iconic jazz standard was originally written as an aria for the 1935 opera Porgy and Bess. The song appears throughout the opera, but is first sung as a lullaby. The languid melody drips with summery afternoon malaise, and you can almost feel the thick South Carolina heat heavy in the air as the children nod off to sleep.

One of the most covered songs in history, Ella Fitzgerald, Janis Joplin, R.E.M. and even the rapper Sublime have put their own spin on the evergreen tune. This arrangement for wind ensemble was written in 2018 by Naoya Wada. Taking the solo line is trumpeter Kate Wilson.

Our Conductor - Danika Pink:

Danika co-founded the Inner West Community Band in 2010, serving as the Musical Director for many years. The band flourished under her direction, continuing to grow in size and standard, and was renamed the IWCB Wind Symphony earlier this year. Danika recently established our association’s second large ensemble, the IWCB Concert Band, which she also conducts. Danika graduated from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music in 2011, and has taught clarinet and saxophone and conducted bands for many years.
