A few years back we built this replica kiln based on an archaeological example from the Medway, Kent. Louise Rayner, pottery specialist and ASE director, talks us through the process as we plan and build the kiln in part 1… stay tuned for parts 2 (firing!) and 3 (did it work?!). #ArchaeoTechKiln

Researchers from @UCLinstit and Archaeology South-East worked on this project with Ian Jackson of the Upchurch Archaeological Research Group. He excavated the kiln we based our replica on back in 1975(!). The project was made possible through support from the UCL SHS Dean’s Fund.

This project also wouldn’t have been possible without all the staff and students at the IoA/ASE who made pots, worked clay, loaded fuel, checked thermometers and unloaded the kiln as part of ArchaeoTech! Thanks are also due to @ButserAncientFarm for asking us to build at their incredible site.
