This documentary explores questions about language, culture and society in Guinea-Bissau. Participants share how they use Kiriol, Portuguese and indigenous languages in every day life, providing valuable insight into the diversity of language practices in the country but also some of the challenges in navigating these different linguistic spaces and contexts. Participants then consider the practical implementation of Kiriol and indigenous languages in the education system in Guinea-Bissau, sharing their views, experience and ideas about best practice. The documentary concludes with three questions for policymakers, education practitioners and linguistic researchers to consider and discuss as they work on these topics.
This documentary was filmed, edited and translated by Jacqueline Rowe. The interviews were conducted between December 2018 and January 2019 with groups of participants in Bissau, Ingore and TcheTche.
