The fortified hermitage of Albalat is located in the Ribera de Cabanes, municipality of Cabanes, in the Plana Alta region, in the province of Castellón. It is, as its name indicates, a hermitage, which, despite its religious use, was fortified, thus fulfilling the double religious-military function. It can be dated between the 13th and 14th centuries, and is built following the characteristics of the Gothic style.
Located on the hill above the hermitage of the same name is a fortress entirely built by the Bishops of Tortosa at the end of the 13th century, probably to encourage the repopulation of the area. The castle must have been abandoned at the same time as its neighboring castle of Miravet, at the beginning of the 16th century.
