Minneapolis is in deep mourning following the tragic death of Alex Jeffrey Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center, who was shot and killed by federal Border Patrol agents on January 24, 2026.
The incident occurred during a federal immigration enforcement operation (Operation Metro Surge) at the intersection of 26th Street and Nicollet Avenue. While the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) claims agents acted in self-defense, Governor Tim Walz and bystander videos have strongly disputed this, showing Pretti holding a cellphone while attempting to assist others before being tackled and shot.
