Series Disclaimer:
It is easy to say or write that historical metronome marks point to super fast, oftentimes impossible tempi. It is much hard - impossible often - to really show it. In this series we take performances of well and lesser known musicians and simply compare their tempi with the authentic, original metronome marks. Not to criticize the tempo decisions those musicians made, simply to see if those claims hold any water.

Of Lang Lang's recent recording of Carl Czerny's famous etude in C Major, opus 299, many will be surprised to learn that it is played in fact too slow, compared to the original tempo Czerny seemingly had in mind. It is strange, since the tempo Lang Lang choose is even not close to Czerny's. And one can read lots of stuff on this famous pianist star today, but he certainly cannot be blamed for an inferior piano technique...
Knowing that this particular piece is among the easier ones Czerny wrote, and by far not the fastest one, one wonders if Czerny was serious at all for the oftentimes apperently insane tempi he demanded. If even someone as Lang Lang proves in a recording that the bar is a little too high, one would think he wasn't. Unfortenutely (depending on how you look at it), that isn't the case. Czerny is one of those early 19th century voices of whom we know so clearly his metronome indications, the famous MM's were... meant to be played exactly as he noted them. So... what do we miss?
