A request from Lee Moran has introduced me to this thought-provoking and moving song written and performed by Lemmy Kilmister of Motörhead.
As I discovered seven years ago when I uploaded another of Lemmy's songs, namely: "I Ain't No Nice Guy" ( • Guitar: I Ain't No Nice Guy (Including lyr... ), although Motörhead were a 'punk rock' or 'heavy metal' band some of their songs do lend themselves to a folk style.
1916 is a song about the terrible 'Battle of the Somme'.
From an article in Wikipedia, Lemmy wrote:
"..'Nightmare/The Dreamtime' and '1916' both relied heavily on keyboards, which was very different for Motörhead – or any heavy band in 1990. I wrote the words before the music. It's about the Battle of the Somme in World War I...Nineteen thousand Englishmen were killed before noon, a whole generation destroyed, in three hours – think about that! It was terrible – there were three or four towns in northern Lancashire and south Yorkshire where that whole generation of men were completely wiped out.."
The chord progression I am using for my interpretation of the song is one I found on the Ultimate Guitar site.
