1. WHO report on non-sugar sweeteners (NSS), March 2023
WHO recommends against the use of NSS to control body weight or reduce the risk of noncommunicable diseases like diabetes, heart disease, etc.
includes all synthetic and naturally occurring or modified non-nutritive sweeteners, e.g. aspartame, saccharin, sucralose, stevia, and stevia derivatives.
2. Sugar consumption guidelines -
WHO (also USA, Aus, Canada, NZ) recommends limiting added sugar intake to 5-10% of daily diet. This is about 6-12 tsp/ day.
3. Take-aways
Don't replace sugar with non sugar sweeteners, e.g. in your chai/ coffee, etc.
Can safely have sugar in your chai/ coffee, sherbets, home made laddoo, kheer, etc., while staying within recommended sugar limits,
what we need to avoid are packaged foods like cereals, juices, colas, energy drinks, ketchup, jams, cookies, biscuits, etc.,
seasonal fruits like mango, are safe for everyone to eat.
