(14 Dec 2015) Thousands of Hamas supporters took to the streets of Gaza city on Monday to mark the 28th anniversary of the founding of the party.
The movement has used the annual commemoration of its December 1987 founding to demonstrate its sway, with large military-style gatherings attended by hundreds of thousands of people.
Co-founder of Hamas, Mahmoud Zahar, demanded that Israel release prisoners it rearrested after freeing them in the 2011 swap.
Israel released 1,027 Palestinian and Arab prisoners to retrieve its soldier Gilad Shalit, who was captured in a cross-border raid by Hamas in 2006.
Later, it rearrested more than 50 in West Bank raids.
Meanwhile, Zahar refused to discuss claims Hamas had captured Israeli soldiers during the 50-day war with Israel last summer.
