When police officers, nurses, and funeral directors start cracking jokes about body bags or brain bleeds, it’s not because they’re heartless—it’s because their jobs are. In this unfiltered talk, clinical and forensic psychologist Dr. Melissa Mork unpacks why the people doing society’s heaviest lifting often lean on the darkest humor. It’s not just about comic relief—it’s a psychological life raft. Equal parts science, storytelling, and "too soon,” this talk explores how gallows humor helps us survive the unimaginable—without losing our humanity (or our lunch).
Dr. Melissa Mork is a professor of psychology, criminal justice and law enforcement. She holds advanced degrees in clinical and forensic psychology (because one degree wasn't stressful enough). She specializes in mental health, grief, and crisis recovery, offering interventions for survivors, families, and first responders impacted by mass shootings. Melissa has authored three books, contributed articles to forensic journals, humor publications, and has written chapters for books on grief. Melissa is a Certified Humor Professional (yep, that’s a thing). She once competed for Minnesota’s Funniest Person She didn’t win but she was the only contestant who could diagnose the judges.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
