The Omega Speedmaster 145.012-67
Without further ado, let’s jump into the watch featured in this video, the Omega Speedmaster ref. 145.012-67.
The Speedmaster is one of the most iconic chronograph wristwatches in existence. It came to market in 1957 alongside the Railmaster and Seamaster 300 and continues to make up the core of Omega’s professional series.
The watch holds a few important horological firsts, including the first chronograph to feature the Tachymeter scale on the bezel instead of around the perimeter of the dial, a design that nearly every other brand has adopted for their own portfolios, including the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona.
The Speedmaster was also famously the first watch worn on the Moon and was present as NASA astronauts first stepped foot on the lunar surface in 1969.
Since then, the Speedmaster has picked up a few charming nicknames, including the Speedy and the Moon Watch.
Omega produced ref. 145.012 for a few years between 1967 and 1969. Although it didn't remain in production for very long, it's still an important part of Omega's history as the last Speedmaster to use the famous caliber 321 movement, which was notably deemed suitable for space travel by NASA.
Omega discontinued caliber 321, replacing it with the caliber 861.
While the original movement was retired, a recreation of the caliber 321 came to market in 2019. The modern reinterpretation is hand-assembled and is almost an exact replica of the original movement, except for a few small modern updates.
145.012 FEATURES
The Omega Speedmaster 145.012 has all the trademark features of a famous vintage Speedy, including an asymmetrical case, twisted "Lyre" lugs, a "Dot over 90" - aka DON - bezel, a Hesalite crystal, and an older-style step dial decorated with an applied Omega logo and tritium plots.
Reference 145.012-67 came to market in 1969, before the Speedmaster's historic first trip to the Moon. These watches are known in watch collecting circles as “Pre Moon” watches.
Our example is a fresh-to-market Pre Moon Omega Speedmaster. It comes to us from the original owner's family and is in great vintage condition.
The step dial features Tritium lume in a warm sandy patina as well as the original tear drop counterweight on the seconds hand - a very desirable feature among collectors in the know.
Fun fact: reference 145.012 was among the last Speedmasters to feature this specific counterweight, adding even more to its collectability.
The watch also features the correct 24-tooth winding crown with flat feet and the original Dot over 90 bezel. The bezel itself is in very good condition with some dings and surface wear present.
The dial is also in good condition, with the collection's signature step design around the outer edge and a lovely dark black hue.
The 42mm case appears to have been polished at some point but still exhibits signs of wear typical of an older watch that is decades old. The case back is stamped with the correct reference number, and the crystal is signed and shows very minimal signs of wear.
Brandon paired this Omega with a sophisticated leather strap that contrasts very nicely with the black dial.
Overall, this is a very nice example of the beloved Omega caliber 321 Speedmaster in great, honest vintage condition.
That's it for another fascinating installment of Vintage of the Week.
