Tumi Molekane is a Tanzanian-born South African rapper, poet, and lyricist. He first rose to prominence as the lead vocalist of the acclaimed band Tumi and the Volume, which officially disbanded in 2012.
In 2016, Tumi reinvented himself under the stage name Stogie T and released a self-titled album featuring some of South Africa’s leading hip-hop artists, including Da L.E.S, Lastee, Emtee, Nasty C, Nadia Nakai, and Yanga.
His musical journey began years earlier. In 2005, Tumi collaborated with Cincinnati-based rapper Main Flow on the track “Trade Winds.” The following year, he released his debut solo album, Music from My Good Eye, through his independent label Motif Records. The album was later recognized as one of the greatest South African albums of all time.
Also in 2006, his poetry was featured in the American literary journal The Subterranean Quarterly.
Tumi’s performance career has deep roots in socially conscious and politically engaged art. Around the early 2000s, he was involved in the Dead Prez show and participated in the Black August Tour to South Africa in 2001. Over the years, he has performed alongside celebrated South African artists such as Blk Sonshine, Keorapetse Kgositsile, Watkin Tudor Jones, and Lesego Rampolokeng, as well as international figures including Saul Williams, Sarah Jones, and Mutabaruka.
In 2015, he collaborated with the French hip-hop collective Chinese Man on the album The Journey.
Tumi’s work has been the subject of academic analysis. In his book Stealing Empire: P2P, Intellectual Property and Hip-Hop Subversion (2008), Professor Adam Haupt of the University of Cape Town examined Tumi’s lyrics—particularly the song “76”—as an example of how hip-hop reflects the inherited violence and complex realities of post-apartheid South Africa. Haupt argued that, despite the commercial and often sexist tendencies of mainstream hip-hop, artists like Tumi represent a movement of socially conscious musicians unwilling to compromise their art or principles.
In 2016, Tumi was featured on Ghanaian rapper M.anifest’s album Nowhere Cool. Two years later, under his Stogie T persona, he released Honey and Pain, the follow-up to his 2016 self-titled album.
On 8 October 2021, Stogie T signed a record deal with Def Jam Africa, which officially confirmed the partnership on 12 January 2022.
