To drive yourself you usually need a private vehicle registered in your name and must obtain a Protected Area Permit PAP from the tourist department in Gangtok. The timing of tourist department is form 7 to 10 am for same day permit and after 10 am you will get the permit for next day, so plan accordingly.
Do not attempt this in hatch back or low clearance vehicle, A 4x4 or an SUV is essential due to frequent land slide and bad road condition. As of December 2025 the road in North Sikkim are still recovering from the major 2023 flood damage. The route to Lachung is open and functional except narrow patches.
Mount Katao is known as Switzerland of Sikkim because of its alpine view and it's also hold series of waterfalls coming down from mountain peak. Usually in the evening it's covered with thick clouds.
