Winter Sowing- really means "cold stratification" where cold temps and moisture prepare a seed for germination.
Here at the farm, I first look at the needs of the seed. For example, a tomato seed or other warm season crops do not need cold stratification so often they may rot in cold wet soils of milk jugs or trays. In contrast, many cool season plants seeds including many native seeds need cold moist stratification which triggers vast changes inside the seeds cells that strengthen the seeds embryo for germination!
This is why you really want to know about the plants habits and needs of the seeds you are sowing.
Years ago, I stopped using jugs and trays to "Winter sow" to end plastics here at the farm and
now have incredible germination
