Just how much better are wheat varieties of today than 50 years ago? A wheat trial site near Bolgart in Western Australia is providing the answer, revealing insights into the genetic gains in yield and other attributes achieved by Australian wheat breeding.
With 48 WA wheat varieties starting from the late 60s to recent varieties of two to three years ago, the trial is a look back in time, enabling measurement of yield and genetic gains that wheat breeders have achieved over the past 50 years to see the many differences in development of plants and plant types compared to more recent varieties.
The trial shows a 0.6 per cent yield gain per year over the last 20 years as a result of wheat breeding. It's effectively putting 21st century data behind yield improvements made over almost half a century.
