Описание: Grave of John Boyd Dunlop, a Scottish inventor and veterinary surgeon, who spent most of his career in Ireland in Deansgrange Cemetery, Dublin.
In October 1887, he developed the first practical pneumatic or inflatable tyre for his son's tricycle. He would move on to make larger tyres for bicycles. He was granted a patent in December 1888. Unknown to him at the time, another Scot, Robert William Thompson, had patented a pneumatic tyre in France and the U.S. in 1847, and he was informed it was invalid two years later.
Dunlop's tyres were used in cycling competitions in Ireland and England. Through the attention these new tyres were getting, he became known to the president of the Irish Cycling Association, Harvey Du Cros. Together, they set up a company, Pneumatic Tyres and Booth's Cycle Agency.
Dunlop retired in 1895, and a year later, Du Cros sold the business to British financier, Terah Hooley, for £3 million. Hooley resold the company to the public for £5 million.
Du Cros remained head of the business until his death in 1918.
Early in the 20th century, the company was renamed Dunlop Rubber.
Though he did not participate after 1895, Dunlop's pneumatic tyre arrived at a crucial time in the development of road transport.
In 2005, Dunlop was inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame.
From the 1980s, he was commemorated on the £10 banknote, issued by Northern Bank (now Danske Bank) as part of their inventor series.
