Every Newly Discovered Sea Animal Explained
For over twelve years, staff at the Horniman Museum in Forest Hill, south London were feeding a completely unknown species of shrimp to the fish in their aquarium. The creature, now named Heteromysis hornimani, is smaller than a child's fingernail and had been breeding prolifically in every tank of the museum, completely unnoticed. Aquarium curator Dr. Jamie Craggs described them simply as "breeding like mad." Scientists believe it hitchhiked to London on an ocean rock, likely from the Caribbean, at some point before 2009. It was only identified as a new species after a Vienna researcher requested mysid crustacean samples from aquaria worldwide.
