During a Tuesday morning lesson at a secondary school in Birmingham, children who have recently arrived in Britain are learning basic greetings in English.
The students share where they come from including: Gaza, Yemen, Afghanistan and The Gambia. Many have fled war and persecution and speak little or no English.
The City Academy in central Birmingham runs a 12-week intensive course for the children to learn basic English skills to help them before they start mainstream education.
Around half of the academy’s 600 pupils speak English as an additional language, known as EAL, and 52 different languages are spoken within the school.
