During Parliament sitting on 27 February 2026, Foreign Affairs Minister Vivian Balakrishnan responded to clarifications raised by Dennis Tan during the Committee of Supply debate on Singapore’s foreign policy.
Mr Tan sought clarification on whether ongoing unrest and violence linked to drug gangs in Mexico would affect Singapore’s plans to establish a new embassy there.
Dr Balakrishnan said the situation would not change the timeline. While Singapore has issued a travel notice to safeguard its citizens, he stressed that the strategic reasons for setting up an embassy in Mexico “remain salient”. He added that backing off during a crisis would send the wrong signal, noting that crises are moments to demonstrate “resolve, reliability [and] trustworthiness”.
Citing past examples such as the evacuation of Singaporeans from Wuhan during COVID-19, he said MFA officers had consistently stepped forward for difficult postings, reflecting a strong sense of mission and responsibility.
He emphasised that in a volatile global environment, Singapore must stay clear-eyed, united and principled — maintaining confidence while keeping “the flag flying high.”
