As I sat around the table, I heard someone say
Food waste’s here for good, there’s no other way

What can one person do, or even a community
Waste I’m afraid is an inevitability

Well I swiftly objected, and politely in rhyme
Suggested some actions worth his effort and time.

I cleared the table and dropped a big beat
And before I knew it, I was out of my seat

Spewing top tips and positive vibes
Ordered some food for thought, with a helping of sides

Why not preserve and pickle food that is past its best?
Give ugly veg a home, it’s no beauty contest

Donate your time, time food or money to a worthy cause
Demand action from lawmakers, for fairer food laws

Use a meal planner for your trips to the shop,
Go easy on portion sizes, know when enough is enough.

But your mouth can do more than just chew on your food
It can spread the word to the world that there is more we can do

Demand action locally, run a food waste event,
A campaign or a party, let your ideas ferment

Or you can start in your kitchen, closer to home
Give batch cooking a try if you’re living alone.

Turn your scraps into stock, don’t let vegetables rot
Cook from root to fruit, and what’s left we can compost

Store food like a pro, practice the art of FIFO
Expiration dates are guidelines, sniff before you throw.

Food waste is a choice, with far-reaching impacts
When thousands go hungry, we surely must act

Wasted land and resources, effort and time
Food waste emissions continue to rise

So you can despair and give in, place your head in the sand
But we have the power to change in each of our hands

So, if I may, I don’t accept what you say
Take your pick of the actions I’ve laid out today.

Better still, do the lot and we’ll do it together
We’ve made a small start, but we can certainly do better.
