Both Japan and the EU live in increasingly unstable neighbourhoods marked by rising geopolitical tensions. The two partners face an expanding range of security and economic challenges, from nuclear proliferation to potential supply-chain disruptions. The Indo-Pacific is the undisputed engine of regional and global economic growth and a strategic centre of gravity in today’s world. Security in this region is essential to ensure a steady economic recovery and avoid disputes between international and regional actors over resources, strategic maritime routes and clashing interests. As like-minded partners cooperating on several economic and political issues, the EU and Japan recognize the geostrategic importance of the Indo-Pacific amid rising tensions and strategic rivalries unfolding in the region.
This Policy Dialogue assessed the state of play and prospects for closer economic and security cooperation between the EU and Japan in the Indo-Pacific region.
