Vidushi Ashoka Dhar is one of the senior female Dhrupad singers of the Dagarvani Dhrupad style. She was born on 27 September, 1947 in Odisha. Her musical journey began in late 1955 with Pandit J.V.S Rao. Vidushi Ashoka Nandy (After marriage she became known as Ashoka Dhar) and her elder sister Vidushi Alaka Nandy both started learning Dhrupad from Ustad Nasir Aminuddin Dagar in 1968.
Ustad Nasir Aminuddin Dagar used to teach the two sisters in daughterly love. At his will the two sisters also performed Dhrupad together as "Nandy Sisters" many times. She has toured a lot in India in very famous festivals (New Delhi and Bombay Dhrupad Festivals, Tansen Samaroh Gwalior, Dhrupad Samaroh Bhopal, Amir Khan Samaroh of Indore, Dhrupad Mela). Apart from India, Vidushi Ashoka Dhar has played a significant role in the promotion and spread of Dhrupad in different countries of the world. In 1985 she received the Surmoni Award.
Vidushi Ashoka Dhar also played a significant role as a guru. After the death of her Guru Ustad Nasir Aminuddin Dagar Sahib, she founded "Dhrupad Gurukul". Her son Shri Rishabh Dhar is a virtuoso Pakhawaj player of this generation. Mother and son performed together at many conference, and still do today.
