As more of this material has been brought into the public conversation, reactions have intensified. Many Muslims strongly object to these questions being raised. Surprisingly, much of the criticism Dr. Jay faced in 2025 came not only from Muslims, but from fellow Christians who challenged his interpretations and conclusions.

Dr. Jay makes an important clarification:
He is not claiming that a man named Muhammad never existed.

Rather, the issue being raised is the same historical standard that has long been applied to Christianity. Christians have been required to demonstrate historically that Jesus of Nazareth existed, lived in the locations described in the Gospels, was crucified, and that the earliest records about Him can be traced to the first century.

Dr. Jay argues that Muslims should be willing to face the same historical questions about Muhammad:

Was he born in Mecca as traditionally claimed?

Did he live there for decades before migrating to Medina?

Were the Qur’anic revelations recorded during the 7th century before his death in 632 AD?

The central issue is historical evidence.

When evidence appears absent, historians must examine the material that does exist—coins, inscriptions, and documents—and ask what they reveal about the earliest centuries.

For the first time in many modern discussions, Muslims are being asked to apply the same historical standards to Muhammad that Christians have long applied to Jesus.

And that conversation is only just beginning.
